🇰🇷 [15th Anniversary of the ROKS Cheonan Sinking] A Tragedy We Must Never Forget

March 26, 2025 marks the 15th anniversary of the ROKS Cheonan sinking, one of the most tragic and controversial naval incidents in South Korea’s recent history.

On this day in 2010, a South Korean Navy corvette—the ROKS Cheonan (PCC-772)—was torn in two and sank near Baengnyeong Island in the Yellow Sea, claiming the lives of 46 sailors. The incident shocked the nation, reshaped inter-Korean relations, and sparked ongoing debates about security, responsibility, and remembrance.

⚓ What Happened on March 26, 2010?

At approximately 9:22 PM KST, while patrolling the Northern Limit Line (NLL), the Cheonan suffered a sudden explosion and broke into two pieces.
Of the 104 crew members on board, 58 were rescued, but 46 tragically lost their lives. The Navy launched immediate rescue efforts, but difficult sea conditions hindered the mission.

Among the heroes of the aftermath was Senior Chief Petty Officer Han Ju-ho, a Navy diver who died during the recovery operations—his sacrifice remains a powerful symbol of duty and courage.

🧨 Cause of the Explosion: North Korean Torpedo?

The official Joint Civilian-Military Investigation Group (JIG), composed of experts from South Korea and allied nations, concluded that a North Korean torpedo had struck the Cheonan. A key piece of evidence was a torpedo propeller marked “1번” (No.1 in Korean) recovered from the seabed.

However, the incident remains controversial.
Alternative theories suggest internal explosion, mine detonation, or mechanical failure. The political and scientific debate surrounding the incident continues to this day, especially among scholars and journalists.

🕊️ Why We Must Remember the Cheonan in 2025

Fifteen years later, the tragedy may fade in public memory, but the sacrifice of the 46 sailors must never be forgotten.
This is not just a story of loss—it’s a lesson in national security, diplomacy, and the cost of peace.

Remembering the Cheonan reminds us of:

  • The price of freedom and sovereignty

  • The importance of military readiness

  • The human cost behind political conflict

🧭 Final Thoughts: The Cheonan Is More Than a Ship

The sinking of the ROKS Cheonan is not just a military incident—
it's a symbol of sacrifice, national defense, and the fragility of peace.
